Continuous EEG Enhances Detection of Post-Stroke Epilepsy Predictors

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, and a significant portion of survivors subsequently develop post-stroke epilepsy (PSE), defined by recurrent unprovoked seizures [1, 2]. Identifying which patients are at highest risk for PSE presents a critical clinical challenge, as early recognition could inform management and follow-up. While electroencephalography (EEG) is a fundamental tool for assessing brain function after injury [3, 4, 5, 6], the utility of a standard, short-duration recording for predicting future epilepsy in stroke patients without acute symptomatic seizures has remained uncertain. A recent retrospective study offers new data on this question by directly comparing the diagnostic and prognostic value of brief versus extended EEG monitoring [7].
