Social Rank Modulates Empathic Pain via ACC-NAcC Circuit in Mice

Empathy, a cornerstone of the patient-clinician relationship, varies considerably among individuals, influencing health outcomes and treatment adherence [1, 2, 3]. While social hierarchies are known to affect mental health and behavior [4, 5], the neurobiological mechanisms linking social status to the perception of another's pain have remained unclear. A recent study in mice investigated this link, focusing on how social rank modulates empathic pain responses and seeking to identify the specific neural circuits responsible, particularly the pathway connecting the anterior cingulate cortex to the nucleus accumbens core [6]. This work provides a potential biological basis for the observable, yet poorly understood, influence of social context on empathy.
