Bipolar disorder (BD) carries one of the highest suicide rates among mental health conditions, presenting a profound and urgent clinical challenge [1, 2]. While interventions like lithium can reduce suicidal events, the neurobiological underpinnings of suicide risk in this population remain poorly understood, hindering the development of more targeted prevention strategies [3, 4]. Impulsivity is a well-documented psychological risk factor for suicide attempts across psychiatric disorders, including BD [5, 6]. However, the specific brain circuit alterations that may predispose individuals with BD to suicidal behavior require further elucidation, particularly as comorbidities with conditions like anxiety and substance use disorders can complicate the clinical picture [7, 8].
