Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Linked to Higher Depression Risk Than Lower-Level Injuries

Spinal cord injury (SCI) presents profound physical challenges, yet its psychological sequelae, particularly depression, are equally critical for long-term outcomes [1, 2]. Patients with SCI often face chronic pain, fatigue, and reduced functional independence, all of which contribute to a significant mental health burden [3, 4]. While various interventions aim to mitigate anxiety and depression in this population [5, 6, 7, 8], a persistent clinical question has been whether the anatomical level of injury influences the risk of developing depression. A recent nationwide cohort study provides new, specific data on this relationship, offering a clearer basis for risk stratification in clinical practice [9].
