Adenoviral Protein Reactivity Linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome After COVID-19

Since the early stages of the pandemic, clinicians have closely monitored the temporal association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the onset of Guillain-Barré syndrome [1, 2]. While the overall incidence of the syndrome did not reach the levels predicted by early case series, a quantifiable increase in risk was consistently observed following the administration of adenoviral-vectored vaccines [3, 4]. Most of these cases present as the classical sensorimotor demyelinating variant, typically responding well to standard intravenous immunoglobulin or plasma exchange [5, 6]. However, the absence of viral RNA in the cerebrospinal fluid and the lack of clear evidence for molecular mimicry have left the underlying pathophysiology of these associations poorly understood [7, 8]. A new study investigates the humoral responses of these patients to determine if specific serological markers can differentiate pandemic-related cases from those with traditional etiologies, potentially guiding future diagnostic workups.
